Uche Monu representing Lagos state has smashed the women 50m backstroke record with a time of 35.18 seconds. The former record set by Amata Micheal at the Imo 98 edition had survived two previous festivals until it was shattered lMonday by Monu.
The six year record was not only brokeb by the gold medalst but the silver and bronze winners Gloria Monor from Bauchi and Meme James from Edo respectively who equally rubbished amatu’s time in the event.
Spokesman of the Nigeria swimming Federation Mr Bassey Koma said the federation was delighted at the feat. “ it shows that the new talents are not only being discovered but these are working assiduously to exert their presence. This can only be meaning fully done through feats such as as breaking records”
Uche is sister to the sensational Ngozi Monu who would be representing Nigeria at the summer Olympics in Athens was equally elated that she could alter the six year old record.
