In an effort to bring the best out of its athletes at the on-going National sports festival in Abuja, the government of Akwa Ibom State has decided to pay its athletes #1, 000 as their daily allowances.
The daily payment according to the state Commissioner for youths and sports development Dr. Chris Ekong is to motivate their athletes and also boost their moral towards victory in their various games.
“The money would help them in winning their games. Beside it is incomparable to what other states are paying their athletes.
We did this because we want our athletes to enjoy their stay throughout the competitions,” he said. Ekong also said, the beneficent gesture is part of his ministry’s policy thrust towards developing sports in the state.
The sport helmsman stressed that the welfare of athletes in any sports championship is always paramount to reiterate that the state government would not relent in its effort to do more to revive sports in the Akwa Ibom.
He remarked that the formation of sports industry has formed part of the integral development plan of the present administration of Governor Victor Attah.
Ekong however assured that he would use his medium to give sports every support needed to develop in his state.
