Cadet cricketers have the opportunity of honing their skills once again as Igbobi College Lagos cricket team confronts its Government College Ibadan counterpart in today's opening game of the resuscitated KIGS Cricket Tournament.
The compeition which holds from March 18-21 at the cricket pitch of St Gregory's College Lagos also features the hosts and King's College Lagos. The acronym KIGS is derived from the first alphabet in the
names of the four participating schools.
The tournament, according to the Howzat Cricket Foundation the organisers, will be played on a round-robin basis, while an exhibition match featuring a combined team of KIGS Old Boys and the present
students comes up on the last day of the competition.
The quadrangular tournament,it wa disclosed, was inaugurated in 1993,but had to be rested after six
years of competition. Not long did action return to the pitch than the KIGS event went into another fit of
lull. The latest revival was made possible courtesy of the Nigera Cricket Association Chairman Dr. John Abebe who reportedly is committing N250,000 to sponsorship of the tournament.
"It is another attempt by the NCA at developing the game from the grassroot. That is the focus of the
association for this cricket year," Abebe told nigeriasports.com.
