Awojobi, Ugboaja swell Nigeria camp

Nigeria team preparing for the FIBA Africa Zone-3 elimination billed for Cote d’Ivoire from August 4 though 10 was at the weekend swelled by the arrival in camp of Tunji Awojobi and Ejike Ugboaja.

The arrival of the duo was a moral boosting to the largely home-based players who has been in camp for close to three weeks.

A source close to the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF told our correspondent that the duo’s arrival will go a long way in increasing competition for shirt among the home-based players who feels that they have automatic shirt for the battle of Cote d’Ivoire where Nigeria is expected to fight for one of the two tickets for the 2009 FIBA Africa Championship for men in Libya.

With the arrival of Israeli-based Awojobi whose last club in the Israeli top league was Hapoel Gilboa-Galil Elyon basketball club and Ugboaja who last played in the colour of Anaheim Arsenal in the NBA development league now bring the number of players in camp to fifteen made up of twelve home-base and three foreign based players with Finland-based Andy Igboanugo completing the number.

The Nigeria team according to feelers from the Secretariat of the federation will jet out on Sunday, August 3 for the qualifiers, which tip-off on Monday August 4 with eight countries that made up the zone expected to fight for honours.
