Alhaji Lamis Shehu Dikko, the chief executive of intercity Bank, has revealed that the financial institution sponsors sporting events as a way of creating job opportunities and building the body and soul of sportsmen and women.
“We do give assistance in terms of sponsorship to quite a number of sports. We do this basically because we are building the body and soul of sportsmen and women. We also sponsor sports to keep our youths gainfully occupied and away from the streets.
“There is no limit to the sports we support/sponsor, Golf, Football, (at the grassroot level in Kaduna) Polo, Basketball,” he told Nigeriasports.com
He further revealed that he has been involved in the game of Polo since 1971 though not as a player. He also said that is a member of the Port-Harcourt Polo Club and that he was at a time the treasurer of the club.
Alhaji Dikko who holds the traditional title of Ajiyan Katsina affirmed that the face of the game has changed.
“In the past Polo was mainly a game for the elites but now anybody interested in the game can be part of it. Now the rich, the not so rich and even the poor play the game. “All you need is to have the skills to mount a horse and play the ball. Quite a lot of the good players are not rich and do not come from a rich background they grew up with the game. Some of them were literally born in the game, like Bello Buba, the highest handicap player in the country was born in the Jos Polo Club
