Polo Does not Need Govt. Funding

Chairman of the Nigeria Polo Association, Senator Ibrahim Idris Kuta representing Niger North-East, has said that the game of Polo is elitist game that does not need government funding to function.

The distinguished lawmaker who was speaking Nigeriasports.com at the opening of Econet sponsored Port –Harcourt Club tournament held at the state capital. He revealed unlike other sports, Polo is an elitist game, which depends mainly on corporate and individual sponsorship for its support and growth.

Senator Kuta Idris also asserted that in his 34 years involvement with the game he has contributed immensely to its growth game in the country and as Chairman increased the membership and improvement in the standard of the game.

On the high rate of injury in the game, the Senator was of the opinion that there are so many other sports with the reported cases of serious injuries to the athletes. Nonetheless he cautioned Polo players to desist from doing stunts to impress the spectator as it might lead to injury. He said that, “the low interest in the game was as a result of its elitist nature, adding having a horse and a pony and maintaining it requires a lot of resources.
