German Klose hits fifa fives goals record

For German player, Klose, what is left unacomplished at the 2006 World Cup, is hanging a Fifa gold medal round his neck and joining others to kiss and toast with the mega gold trophy.

According to the record books of the world's governors of the game, Klose has attained the height of sharing the same seats with compatriots such as; Helmut Rahn, Gerd Muller, Jurgen Klinsmann - it is safe to say that Miroslav Klose is in esteemed company after reaching double figures in FIFA World Cup™ goals. But despite the feats of his predecessors in the German goalscoring pantheon, Klose has achieved something that eluded the others.

With his equaliser against Argentina in Berlin, the 28-year-old became the first German player to score five goals in two separate editions of the tournament. He is also only the second player in history to achieve the feat after Peru’s Teofilo Cubillas, who scored five in both the 1970 and 1974 FIFA World Cups.

Go to the Germany team page Rahn, who died in 2003, came close. 'The Boss' scored four goals in 1954, and six in 1958. Muller, ten-goal tournament top scorer in 1970, missed out on the achievement by a single strike, following his quartet in 1974. Klinsmann managed five goals in 1994, but did not surpass the three-goal mark in the FIFA World Cups that sandwiched the one played in America.

Klose’s five strikes during the 2002 competition, three short of adidas Golden Shoe winner Ronaldo, all came in the group stage. This time four of his five also arrived in the group stage – his goal against Argentina was the first he has scored in a FIFA World Cup knockout round. In one of the two games in which he failed to get his name on the scoresheet, that against Ecuador, the number 11 also collected the Budweiser Man of the Match award.

With the semi-final against Italy to look forward to, the Werder Bremen striker will be hoping there are more goals to come. He may have eclipsed Rahn, Muller and Klinsmann on one front, but they all have something he desires most of all – a FIFA World Cup winner's medal.
