Almost one week before the 27th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria Tennis Championships will serve off; the drums of war are already beating in the National Stadium tennis courts where the gladiators are perfecting their battle plans.
One of such players who have been spending extra time at the courts which will also host the biggest local tennis event is Paul Moses. He has never won the championship, in fact his best was a quarter-final finish two years ago.
But now, he is sending a message to all other players dreaming of the ultimate diadem that he should be prepared to face his ferocious strokes if they must win.
‘I have a big dream in this championship. I am determined to win the star prize of N250,000 and join the big league of Nigerian tennis.
Moses who is twenty years has been on the tennis circuit since his days as a toddler. But to date he has not won any major event. However he has developing himself by not only participating in championships but attending training programmes abroad.
Luck smiled on him last year when he clinched a sponsorship deal with Health Forever Product Limited owned by a tennis enthusiast Mr. Abimbola Okubena. Under the deal he was sponsored to a training programme in Spain and South Africa. And now he believes he is in the right frame to win a major.
‘I have enjoyed maximum support from my sponsor and the only way I can pay him back is by making an impact in this event’ he told Nigeriasports.com after a hectic workout at the National Stadium Thursday.
The upcoming player whose asset is in his big serves said he was expecting to use the impending championship as a stepping stone to what he referred to as his rightful place in Nigerian tennis.
‘I feel good enough to be in the big boys class and I know that is the point I will make during the CBN tournament'.
Meanwhile, the apex bank is committing over two million naira as prize money in the tournament which is one of the longest running in the country. The championship is billed to run from June 16 to 25 at the National Stadium tennis courts in Surulere.
