Globacom congratulates Ogun State, athletes

Globacom Limited, the Official Telecommunications Partner of the Gateway Games 2006 has congratulated athletes participating in the bi-annual sports fiesta and urged them to see the competition as a platform to establish bonds of unity.

In a goodwill message to the people of Ogun State, Games organisers and the athletes, Globacom in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Paddy Adenuga praised the participants for being found eligible to represent their respective states.

“We congratulate the athletes and officials representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for being found worthy to participate in this historic event.  Globacom also congratulates the government and people of Ogun State on the occasion of the celebration of their 30th year as a state and for giving Nigerians a Sports Festival that captures the unity, talent and potentials of the Nigerian youths”, Adenuga remarked in the message.

Continuing, Adenuga said the Sports Festival has over the years not only strengthened the bonds of unity of the nation, riding on the peoples’ passion for sports, but has provided a platform for youths to celebrate their rich endowments in a competitive atmosphere.

“Over the years, our youths have celebrated their rich endowments at the Festival and the objective to identify, harness and celebrate the Nigerian sports complements our vision at Globacom to celebrate our unique accomplishments as a nation”, the Globacom Executive Director observed.

He explained that Globacom’s commitment to a wholesome approach to sports development informed its decision to support the Sports Festival which is the fertilising ground for talents to flourish into international acclaim. Mr. Adenuga recalled that in 2003, cash prizes and products provided by Globacom motivated Team Nigeria to top the medals table at the 8th All Africa Games.

In his words, “Globacom has since the inception of its operation, remained the pace-setter in contributions to sports development and promotion with an annual sponsorship portfolio in excess of N1 billion. With a commitment to empower Nigerians to be their best, Globacom partnered the Federal Ministry of Sports to lead Team Nigeria to emerge overall best at the 8th All Africa Games in 2003”.

The 15th National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games was flagged off last Thursday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta by the President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at a colourful ceremony witnessed by a number of state governors, ministers, national assembly members, traditional rulers and captains of industry. The Games willl end on April 20.
