Contrary to speculations that, members of the Nigerian Supporters Club went through a harrowing and teeth-gnatching period while stranded in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo after the 25th Africa Nations Cup soccer fiesta, nigeriasports.com can now reveal that, "it was an eventful era for us compared to previous engagements."
It was, we learnt, a period when members, including the President-General Dr. Rafiu Ladipo and the Secretary-General Yomi Whesu, recalled that, "though it was unfortunate that the team could not make the trip back home as scheduled, nonetheless, we had no cause to regret our unplanned-for stay.
"The Nigerian Embassy in Cairo took very good care of all our members. We could not have faired better if, we had, had to be on our own. In fact, we were very proud that, we are Nigerians.
"Some Nigerians rumoured that, we resorted to begging after a few days of being unable to live with the pangs of hunger, but as you know, this is not possible in a strange land. Some others said that, we managed to have a meal a day. This was not true; while yet another section of the Nigerian public, speculated that, we were getting our acts together for a home-ward journey by sea...these were all lies," the members chorused during an interview session with nigeriasports.com in Lagos.
The members, 170 in all, at last flew into the country on Sunday February 26, 2006,after remaining stranded in Egypt for two weeks, due to irregularities in their flight schedule with Safeway Travels Agnecy, based in Lagos.
