Nigeria and traditional rivals, Ghana, found another platform Monday to renew their old rivalry in sports when they met in the table tennis event at the maiden West African University Games which began at the University of Lagos.
The players of the two countries, who dominated proceedings in Group D of the eight-group event, ignited the Indoor Sports hall of UNILAG with fireworks, contesting every stroke as if the group games were the final matches.
Former Captain of Ghana Under-21 table tennis team, Geoffrey Narh, dusted Lagos State player, Segun Saliu, representing UNILAG, 3-2, in a five-game thriller.
This however set the spectators, made up mostly of Nigerian students, against him when the University of Cape Coast student took on Dapo Sotola of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, in the second group game.
Contending against the crowd and the reigning university students’ table tennis champion, Narh was close to tears when he lost the highly exciting game 3-2.
Events continue today in the three events of the first WAUG-TATT Games as Athletes takes to the tartan track to out do one another.
