In pursuance of its resolve to sustain Delta State's leadership in swimmin in the country, the Government has endorsed the staging of the Governor's Cup Swiming Champonship come June, 2006 in Warri. This has received the approval of the Nigeria Swimming Federation; soon after the Federation's Executive Board meeting in the city of Warri.
Accordingly, the Board gave its approval to the hosting of the 1st Delta State Governor's Cup Swimmng Championship by Delta State, following effort to give the sport a rosier placing in international meets on one the hand, and to complement Delta State's zeal and push for the game to soar higher in the country, on the other.
"We in the Federation have always watched with keen interest, the State's indomitable zeal to maintain and sustain their leadership in the sort. We have also discovered that to further maintain their stance, they have gone into the construction of Olympic standard swimming pools in three towns in the State.
"This is by any standard, a great feat and testimonies to the State's readiness to develop the sport ... so we have but to partner with Delta State through this identification.
Scheduled to hold in Warri, with Oghara standing-by, talents discovered at the Championships are expected to go to camp preparatory to the Senior African Swimming Championship slated for Dakar the Senegalese capital in September, 2006. Delta State will become the second State in the country to have such an annual swimming chamionships tagged "THE GOVERNOR'S SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP."
Members present at the Warri meeting were; Ahaji Haruna Bako - 1st vice President, Mrs Daisi Oke - 2nd vice, Chief Olatokunbo Thomas -vice president (CANA),Hon,. Chamberlain Nnamdi, Prof. Yomi Awosika, Navy Captain Ola Lawal and Chief Josept Odobeatu.
Others included; Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, SSG Delta State, Mr. Saheed Obadina -national coach, Mr. Lucky Asemota,Asst. Secretary-General and Mr. Dans Adokiye,Secretary General of the Federation.
