Balogun U-16 Rookies tourney dunks-off

The annual Rookies under-16 tournament dunks off today at the Police College, Ikeja.

The tournament which is in its seventh edition is the brain-child of former international guard, Mark Balogun an Assistant Suprintendent of Police (ASP).

According to the Police Bombers Basketball club sweat merchant, six teams will each feature in the boys age 10 to 12 cadre and the girls U-16 while ten will battle for honour in the boys age 13 to 16.

Balogun says the tournament is meant to give the up and coming players the needed avenue to show case their talents and be discovered.

He gave account of the tournament from inception and some of the players who came out of the programmes, who are today's household name in Nigeria and world basketball.

The list include; Churchil Odia, Akin Akintunde, the Dawodu brothers of Segun of Police Bombers basketball club, Moses of Union Bank basketball club and Daniel of Nigeria Customs basketball club, Malik Tella, Mike Ohiero of Ebun Comets basketball club, Onyekachi Ebenuwa also of the Bombers basketball club, Julie Onyelugo, Juliet and Nkoyo all of Dolphins basketball club just to mentiuon a few.

The tournament will run through next Thursday as new kids are set to be launch on the Nigeria basketball scene.
