Lagos State has emerged top of the southwest zonal qualifiers of the 15th National Sports Festival concluded last weekend at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan.
The state with the acronym, Centre of Excellence qualified in grand style in six of the seven team events competed for at the zonal elimination.
The state dictated the situation of things in Basketball, Handball and Volleyball events where its men and women teams came top but shared points with Oyo and Ondo in Tennis, Abula and Hockey event, but bowed to the superior fire power of Oyo, Osun and Ondo states in the football event where it failed to impress.
In basketball men event Lagos qualified along side Oyo while Ondo picked the second female ticket, Oyo and Ondo also followed suit in the men and women handball event while Oyo picked the two tickets behind Lagos in the men and women volleyball event.
The state, however, shared points with Ondo in the Abula game coming second twice in the men and mixed games but came topped in the women category ahead of Ondo. The state also lost the top spot to Ondo in the men’s hockey event but rallied back to place first in the women hockey event with Osun coming second.
In Tennis it was Oyo all the way as it beat Lagos to the second spot in all the five categories – men’s single, ladies single, men’s double, ladies double and mixed double.
The State was not so lucky in the soccer event as it missed out completely with Oyo and Osun going through in the men soccer event while Osun and Ondo picked the two tickets for the women soccer event to the 2006 15th national sports festival tagged ‘The Gateway games’.
