“Humpty, dumpy,” so the Enyimba FC, known as the ‘Peoples Elephants had come in from the blues to trample upon any and all teams that dared stood on their path to the continental marble – the CAF Cup…so too sounded their fall in Egypt last Sunday.
The continental ‘Victor Rostrum’ had perennially remained too slippery for all Nigerian teams until the Elephants decided to brave the typhoon. When they eventually wrested home the trophy in 2003, they held on jealously to it and proved to the rest of the African continent, that their victory was no farce.
For two consecutive years, the Aba-based Elephants ruled the continent’s soccer jungle. But when the ‘cock was about crowing the third time,’ the actualization of her dream to have the hitherto most-sought-after crown, for keep, went burst.on Sunday September 11, 2005.
.The Egyptians refused to let their Nigerian guests go… denying the fruition of their ambition to toast with the cup a third time. They beat them 2-1; thus shoving them out of the race by a slim red line.
The story of that loss, would have been a bit consoling if, it has not also burst their dream of featuring in the FIFA World Club championship scheduled for November 2005.
The Nigerians looked good to reenact their past two years’ wonders, when they struck their hosts in the 27 minute through Atanda Sakiru..
It was a blow too many for the Pharaoh kinsmen. The North Africans’ attacks arrow head, Osama Hoshi was on hand to hit back at their guests. And they did not stop there, until they ensured that, they zipped-up any chance of Enyimba dreaming of any farther advancement in the race for the trophy.
Dolphins swallow Gabonese at home
While drumbeats in Aba, the home of Enyimba, ‘Peoples Elephants’ will be on low key, it will be loud partying time for dwellers and followers of Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt. They have cruised into the next round of the Confederation Cup.
The Nigerian giant soccer ‘fishes’, against the stormy ocean water of Libreville, Gabon, swam safely ashore with a 2-3 victory over opponents, FC 105. The swim has given them a berthing slot on the top of the CAF Confederation Cup Group B Table.
Thus at the end of the round, Dolphins FC grossed 10 points from four matches, with three wins, a draw, and no loss. They have 10 goals for, four against with an aggregate of + 5 goals. Their immediate chasers, Ismaili of Egypt, have seven points.
