“For the sake of the Eagles, so that, my fatherland’s national flag would be one of those to be flown in Germany next year, when the world’s soccer lords converge to determine who the ‘Capone’ as the Sailors would say, is”... that is why, one of Nigeria’s top football coaches has suddenly turned to the holy books of the Christians – The Bible.
The coach, Godfrey Esu while speaking with nigeriasports.com in our Lagos office, recited religiously: “It is going to be tough for us to make it, but with God, nothing is impossible. Both Angola and Nigeria are tied on points on the Group Table, with the Angolans having an edge because of the monstrous head to head rule.
“Looking at the table again, you’ll see that we are doing better than the Angolans, in terms of goals advantages and other statistics. Somehow, something tells me in my inner mind that, the Eagles will make it to the World Cup Finals in Germany next year.
“I have been praying and reading relevant passages in the Bible for the Eagles to succeed and that is why, I am telling you now, that Nigeria will be at the World Cup next.” Looking relaxed and wearing a look, which could be translated as meaning; “I have laid my cards bare to you and I stand by what my mind tells me,” Esu continued again. This time, he chose to be technical:
“If you follow the trends of the qualifiers so far, especially in our Group, you’ll see that, Angola did not win any away match. The best they have been able to earn, had been a draw. All their victories were gotten at home in Luanda.
“So, it would be strange if they go to Kigali and defeat the Rwandese at home…if that happens, then there would be more than what would meet the eyes. They Angolans, would be playing under intense pressure in Rwanda, while their hosts, will be very relaxed and better focused.
“They would be under pressure to win and in such situations, teams often find concentration very difficult…this is of course, a vital factor in achieving success in football. But the Nigerians at home in Abuja, have all the aces…there, and the fact that, I now pray more than ever before for their success, lies my confidence” the former Gabros International FC of Nnewi shot-caller, concluded.
