The President of the Federal Reupblic of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, was indeed thrilled at the way visiting Head of Commonwealth government were left overwhelmed by the very sight of the IBB International and Golf Country Club in Abuja.
The course set among sprawling hills and raw leafy shrubs was the centre of attraction while the Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting [CHOGM] lasted in Abuja. Besides golf, the heads of goverment could not help but hold a one day resort at the amazingly set course.
Even though the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair did not swing it out at the course, he was on two ocassion seen pacing around the 18th fairway of the course, obviously lapping on the utmost serene environment of the course. On two ocassion, the Prime Minister's wife had to retreat to the course for dinner.
All delegates who were part of the event could not help but commend adequate security arrangement the Nigerian government put on ground within the range of the course. Soldiers, heavily armed , secured the premises of the vast course. There were snipers well hidden on trees across the whole of the 18 holes while
combatant troops were on ground, in bushes, through the whole of eight days that the course was used by the Commonwealth heads. However the course was reopened to regular members yesterday [Tuesday] after eight days of compulsory 'off'.
