Adewale Abey fails to win African title

Nigeria’s Adewale Abbey has failed in his bid to win the African heavyweight boxing title as the jinx that has trailed Nigerian boxers anytime they fight in Ghana continued.

‘Tiger’ as he is called lost a split decision to Ghana's Lee Manuel Osei at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in Accra.

Judge Adon Bette of Benin scored the fight 119-109, while Tony Lexon of Nigeria made it 112-116 and Ghana's Ataa Eddie Pappoe scored it 120-110 in favour of Osei.

The fight, which started slowly, gathered momentum from the third round when Osei stunned Abbey with a powerful right on the retreat.

Prince Adeboye, the Nigerian vice president of the ABU presented the belt to Osei with the help of Azumah Nelson, former World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight and super featherweight champion.

Adewale however was not at home with the judges decision as he thought he did enough to win the fight which he had promised to win by knockout.

Abbey has failed to resurrect his career since he lost the National title to Richard Igbinegu in 2003 in Ibadan.

He has lost virtually every fight since then.
