FIFA instructor tips Falcons

Falcons against England
Nigeria's Super Falcons, Africa's sole representative in the women's tournament, face Sweden and Japan in Group E in Wednesday's draw in Athens and FIFA Instructor and Secretary-General of Norway Football Association, Karen Espelund expects the ladies to ruffle feathers at August’s Olympic Games in Athens. Nigeriasports.com can report.

“We were lucky to beat your Falcons in Canberra during the last Olympics. Your strikers hit the bar a couple of times .It was a very close game and if they are still that good, they have a very, very good chance at the in Athens”, she said.

Espelund, who was in Nigeria to conduct a FIFA Administrative course for Women Football Club Managers and Secretaries enumerated some of the Super Falcons strong attributes as physical strength, good technical skills and a disciplined defence.

“Mostly the Nigeria team is typically African in terms of team organization and the players are very physically strong. They use this to a great advantage”, she told Nigeriasports.com

Espelund who once featured in the Norwegian National team however warned the Falcons not to be complacent as they could be punished by some “cynical teams”.

“They must have constant training before the Olympics and I hear they are already doing that. They must also be a little cynical when they are playing in international competitions. If a team is naïve at that level they stand a risk of being punished. Most teams parade a strong defence and even play without a libero but this gets them results”

Meanwhile, Nigeria's Super Falcons, Africa's sole representative in the women's tournament, face Sweden and Japan in Group E of the Athens 2004 female football event in the draws made on Wednesday.

Chief Coach of the Super Falcons, Ismaila Mabo after one of the team's training sessions in Abuja said the team has taken shape “The girls are doing pretty well”, he said at the secluded Chida International Hotels lodge in Utako District. “They responding very well both mentally, physically and otherwise."
