Glover vows to punish transfer licence racketeers

President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria [HFN] Dr. Lanre Glover has vowed to expose and punish perpetrators of illegal transfer of players recently uncovered in the federation, even as the panel set up to investigate the case prepares to make public its findings this week.

Clandenstine  transfer of handball players with fake licences was blown open last month when a national team player[names withheld] was sanctioned by the HFN for allegedly travelling to Qatar,to play for a club in that country's league, with forged documents.

The HFN had furnished handball authorities in Qatar with information on the players status and subsequently asked that the player be barred from playing in Qatar.

Of course the said player had cried foul and threatened to take the HFN to court over the matter, alleging that certain individuals in the federation provided him with the clearance letter he took to Qatar.

"The case is a serious one,I must tell you. That is why we set up a panel to do justice to it,"Glover told nigeriasports.com in an interview, Sunday."What happened was that I got a correspondence from the international body about Ngerian players that were supposed to be  playing in some countries, but actually they're not engaged in competitive handball or are being exploited by the foreign clubs because they [the players] had signed themselves into slavery."

Sources at the HFN had indeed confided in nigeriasports.com that a national team coach[names also withheld] was specialised in procurring forged transfer licences for players desperate to leave the country at the princely sum of $3,000.

"The arrangement was that the players would have to part with that amount from the paltry sum they stood to receive from the clubs in  which ever country they chose to go," said the source, adding that "the bubble burst on the fraudulent act during the last sports festival in Abuja, but the euphoria of that festival had subdued the controversy elicited by the scandal."

Glover disclosed that the panel led by Major Ibrahim Udoanaka[rtd] was asked to do a thourough  job on the matter ,and the report of the panel is expected to be out this week."I promise you that no one fund guilty will go unpunished,"he quipped.
