Female League reviews: Delta, Bayelsa start well

Delta Queens players file out after a league match
Both Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa and Champions Delta Queens of Asaba started well in the female league week 1 games last weekend winning 2-0 and 1-0 respectively.

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa defeated Star studded Pelican Stars of Calabar 2-0.

Less than five minutes into the game, Chioma John rammed home the curtain raiser which Pelican Stars Keeper, Ogechi Onyinanya could do nothing about, and after that, Cameroonian International, Gladys Ayele made it 2-0 and beyond the reach of Pelican.

Effioanwan Ekpo, who played in midfield for Pelican Stars blamed fatigue for the loss as she told nigeriasports.com after the match.

“It was terrible, and I do not wish to ever play a match like this in all my life,” Ekpo told nigeriasports.com.

“We were only released from the National team on Thursday mornig so while the others went by road I decided to go by air but on arrival at the Port Harcourt Airport at about 11am on Thursday, I had to wait for the Pelican Stars bus but it did not come.”

“After waiting at the airport for more than nine hours I had to leave to Rumuokoro where I waited until midnight before they came along with the other players, and we only got to Bayelsa at about 2am and found a Hotel to sleep at close to 5.30am so playing a match less than 12 hours later was going to be difficult”

Ajuma Ameh collaborated Ekpo’s excuse when she spoke with nigeriasports.com.

“When we got to Aba, we had to wait for them who were delayed from Calabar and by the time we got to BAyelsa and settled down it was almost day break on Friday, the day of the match. As far as I know, only Ifeanyi Chiejine and the keeper, Oge played well in the match.”

Rivers fail to dim Sunshine Stars

It was a day of tears in Port Harcourt as players of Rivers Angels sports club wept uncontrollably after ending their first match of the season goaless at home against Sunshine Stars of Akure.

With the Rivers State Government seemingly uninteresting in the affairs of the club, the players determined in their hearts to win well in a bid to attract sympathy from the Sports Ministry who are aware they have not been paid for seven months.
It was a depleted side used by the Angels as at least ten of their key players were rendered ineligible due to clearance problems.

Eventually they had to depend on nine of their players from the national U-19 team who only arrived Port Harcourt 8am on match day after an 18 hour road trip from Lagos.
