FIBA diamond cup, as First Bank challenge for worl

If you think that the FIBA World Championship and the Olympics are the only occasion to see the best teams from around the world to compete – you are wrong! You don’t have to wait every 2 years to witness the elite of men’s basketball in a top notch competition. The FIBA Diamond Ball gathers the top teams from each continent to determine the unofficial World Champion every year.

In 2004 it will be the ultimate test for the world’s finest teams, whether they are ready for the Olympic Basketball tournament. Serbia and Montenegro, the premier address for world class basketball, will host the event from July 31 through August 3, 2004. The city of Belgrade will open its brand-new arena which can hold 20.000 spectators. Excitement guaranteed

Which is the best women's basketball club on earth? This question remained unanswered until the inaugural FIBA Women's World Cup crowned its champion on 19th October in Samara, Russia. The elite clubs from five continents had gathered their finest players: Laureen Jackson (AUS), Elena Baranova (RUS), Chamique Holdsclaw (USA), Ann Wauters (BEL), Audrey Sauret (FRA), Sheryl Swoopes (USA), Anna Arkhipova (RUS) and Janeth Arcain (BRA) were just a couple of names of a long list of top stars.

It was display of World Champions and Olympic medalists, you could easily have turned this into an All-Star extravaganza, if there wouldn’t have been something at stake: the eternal rivalry between the European top clubs, the first international competition for a team from the WNBA, and the quest for glory from the clubs from Oceania, Asia and Africa
