Nigeria to host ITF cadet tourney
Tennis authorities in Nigeria have accepted a request by the International Tennis Federation[ITF] that the country stage the 2004 Confederation of African Tennis[CATS] Under-14 tournament for burgeoning players in the West and Central African regions. Secretary-agaeneral of the Nigeria Tennis Federation[NTF] Segun Oguntade told nigeriasports.com in an exclusive interview Thursday that the tennis courts at the National Stadium in Lagos will be playing host to more than 80 participating players from 20 countries in the aforementioned regions.
"Each country will be represented by four players and these include two boys and two girls," explained Oguntade."Nigeria as host country will parade four boys and same number of girls."
Some of the would-be participating countries are the Republic of Benin,Cape Verde,Cote d'Ivoire,Equitorial Guinea,Gambia,Guinea Bissau,Liberia,Mauritania,Nigeria,Sierra-Leone and Burkina Fasso.
Others are Democratic Republic of Congo,Gabon,Ghana,Guinea Conakry,Mali,Niger,Senegal and Togo.
Oguntade revealed that the federation had since embarked on sponsorship drive for the competition which is expected to hold barely a month after the Annual General Meeting of the ITF scheduled for June7-10 in Barcelona,Spain.
"The NTF president[ Sani Ndanusa] while in Barcelona, will use the opportunity to liaiase with ITF officials on the assisstance they have pledged to render to us in term of organisation,"he qiupped.
Blessing Samuel and Sunday Emmanuel,two of the players who represented Nigeria at the lrecent African Junior Championships in Cairo top the list of those the NTF is likely to feature at the ITF/CATS tournament.
