Onikeke gets new commonwealth date![]() Onikeke is challenging Ossie Duran of Ghana for the commonwealth welterweight title. The much talked about bout, which would have been held in May had to be shifted because of the National Sports Festival will now hold on June 18. The new date for the bout tagged ‘Battle in the harmony City’ has already gotten the approval of the Commonwealth boxing Council (CBC) and the champion, Duran. The battle is taking place in Onkeke’s home state, Ilorin-Kwara state, Nigeria. Promoter of the bout Remi Aboderin of Freels and Threels promotions who just returned from a trip to Ghana where he went to speak with the champion, Duran, said there wouldn’t be any further postponement. He pleaded with the state governor to release the fund he promised them to stage the bout, which he said would benefit an indigene of the state. “Fatai is from the state and if he wins the commonwealth title in front of his home fans it will well adored,” he told nigeriasports.com Meanwhile Fatai Onikeke, the challenger said he did not relent in his training when the bout was postponed. “I have been training all these while and not even the postponements deterred me,” Onikeke told nigeriasports.com. “I am going to win the title because it will boost my ranking and I stand to gain a whole lot from it” He appealed to Kwara state governor, Bukola Saraki to expedite action on the release of funds so that his dream would be realized.
