Swimming: Delta clealy the best

Spokesman for the Nigeria Swimming Federation, Bassey Koma reveals to nigeriasports.com that he is not surprised at the way Delta state dominated the swimming event at the National Sports Festival despite not having a single swimming pool in the state.

Delta state won 19 gold medals ahead of Lagos, who placed second in the swimming event with 9 gold medals, a situation Koma attributed to seriousness on the part of the state.

“At the last U-15 championships in Ilorin, Delta also came out tops and they trained those talents discovered there for about two years before this festival that just ended in Abuja.”

“The surprising dimension to this is that Delta State cannot boast of a single swimming pool, and they have topped other traditional swimming states who have all the facilities.”

He spoke well of Delta Swim Coach, Monday Aigbe who trains his swimmers in the Ethiope river.

“Having come out of the Ethiope River into the Olympic sized swimming pool, it is good to see how he was able to make them adapt quickly to the change in environment and of course what we saw was a remarkable performance by a crop of young swimmers who represent the new generation of Nigerian swimmers.
