Supporters allege impersonation
Fresh crisis looms in the sports supporting fraternity following allegation of impersonation levelled against unidentified persons who travelled under the aegis of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club [NFSC] to the last African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
Akinloye Olurotimi,Chairman of the Cote d'Ivoire chapter of the NFSC told nigeriasports.com in an exclusive interview Wednesday in Lagos, that certain people in the Nigerian capital had made the trip to Tunisia claiming to be representing the NFSC chapter in Abidjan, whereas the real Cote d'Ivoire-based members were unable to travel to the North African country. "The strength of our memberhip in Cote d'Ivoire is between 100 and 120," he disclosed."We obtained our visa for the trip to Tunisia in Abidjan, but we couldn't go because it was too late." The French-speaking Olurotimi who spoke through his Secretary-General said those in Abidjan were shell-shocked when they learnt that some people had indeed gone to Tunisia as members of the supporters club in Cote d'Ivoire. He revealed:"We don't know them.Ten people claimed to be from Abidjan and they went to Tunisia. One of them who is a woman even claimed to be the secretary when in fact our secretary in Cote d'Ivoire is a man." Olurotimi stated that his chapter has already forwarded a strongly-worded protest letter to the international arm of the supporters club, while stressing that he has also reached out to officials of chapters in other African countries to be wary of such occurences. The NFSC Cote d'Ivoire chapter chairman was in Lagos to find out first hand plans being made by the national body ahead of the elections due to hold in June. About 50 members of the Abidjan-based NFSC chapter ,according to Olurotimi, are billed to storm Abuja early next month for the 2006 World Cup qualifier between the Super Eagles and the Bees of Rwanda. 0
