COJA contractors defend claims

Contractors owed by the local organising committee for the 2003 All Africa Games, COJA,would next week appear before a panel set up by the Federal Government to authenticate claims being made by the contractors for supplies and services provided,nigeriasports.com exclusively reveals.

Curtains were drawn on the 8th All Africa Games held in Abuja seven months ago.And COJA had since commenced a winding up process with a view to balance its books and submit its report, but lack of funds to settle debts owed to certain contractors had ensured that the organising committee's winding up job  persists with no end in sight.

Executive Director of COJA  Dr. Amos Adamu told nigeriasports.com in an exclusive interview that the contractors are expected to produce evidence of jobs carried out by them for the committee and those certified as worthy of re-imbursement will be paid by the government.

"Government has asked them to come and defend their claims because government wants to clear their liabilities so that COJA can wind up finally and that's  in a matter of one or two weeks if everything worked according to schedule," he stated.

Speaking on his next endeavour after COJA, Dr. Adamu said he would have to wait until his posting is confirmed.

Said him:"I am a civil servant, they will post me very soon.I think I have offered my best to sports, I need new challenges where I can explore fresh initiatives."

Meanwhile congratulatory messages have not ceased to pour in for the COJA boss. The latest coming from the Minister of Sports,Youth and Child Development in Zambia who commended Adamu for successfully putting together the 8th All Africa Games.

"Despite a barrage of hostile media reports discrediting your preparations of the games and other logistical arrangements, I personally feel that your committee put up above average show and must be encouraged to keep up with such good work," the message contained in a letter signed by the minister Gladys Nyirongo, partly read.
