Football semi finallists emerge

Enugu Team celebrate their quarter final victory
Edo State, Enugu, FCT and Kano State on tuesday qualified for the semi finals of the male football event at the 14th National Sports Festival in Abuja.

The football quarter final game between Edo state and Katsina played on Tuesday afternoon at the national stadium training pitch ended abruptly after the center referee had to call off the match for fear of his life.

Katsina players, apparently incensed at what they deemed to be poor officiating attacked the referee, and physically assaulted him.

After more than ten minutes of stoppage due to that incident, the game was called off.

Scores at that time was 1-1.

Edo state sports director, Brown Ebewele, also known as jujuman was at the scene when it happened and he voiced his displeasure at the behavior of the Katsina players.

“It’s terrible, but I leave the match officials to decide on what to do. They are the ones who were assaulted not the Edo players so its not for us to protest or do any such thing.” Brown told nigeriasports.com.

he said, as far as he is concerned, the rules state clearly that Edo state wins by default and he would not expect any thing less.

Enugu knocks out Lagos

In another quarter final match, Enugu State, clearly underdogs in the encounter, were 1-0 winners over highly favoured Lagos State.

Enugu scored through a penalty kick taken mid way into the second half and they held on until full time.

Kwara State also lost 0-1 to Kano through a late goal, while hosts, Abuja managed a 2-1 victory over a stubborn Oyo side.

Oyo State scored first midway in the second half while the FCT boys replied less than five minutes later, through Cletus who rose above the Oyo State to nod home a pull out from Dickson Ituaghan.

With just about seven minutes left to play, Victor Suleiman converted a penalty for FCT to seal the match.
