I believe at the end of Tuesday’s activities we will have sixty gold medals, then tell me which state can catch up with us?” FCT get medal incentive Nasir El Rufai, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has finally made financial promises to Team FCT as regards medal wins in the ongoing sports festival. On Tuesday morning the minister sent word to the atheletes that they will receive the sum of fifty thousand naira each for a gold medal, thirty five thousand for a silver and twenty thousand for gold. However no mention was made of an increase on their daily camp allowances which still stand at forty naira daily. FCT, Director of sports, Col B. Kachim, however advised the athletes to continue to give their best as they are still looking into the issue of the allowances, promising that it would be increased as soon as possible.
Rivers state Taekwondoist, Solomon Eleyi on Tuesday sent his opponent from Kogi State, Babageni Abdulahi to the orthopaedic hospital when he broke his left hand from the elbow in a preliminary taekwondo fight in the fly weight category. Solomom told nigeriasports.com shortly after the incident that his technique was responsible for the broken arm but however he would be paying a visit to his injured opponent as it was a competitive fight and he expects that the injured Babageni will accept it in the spirit of sportsmanship. Rivers Judo Coach claims bias Rivers State judo Coach,Godspower Godfrey claims a referee from Ekiti state robbed his State in a judo fight on Monday involving Rivers State and Ondo State. According to Godfrey, the referee from neigbouring Ekiti sympathetically awarded the fight to Ondo state. The Rivers Coach told nigeriasports.com that his judoka should have been awarded the fight given that he did more attacking than his counter part from Ondo and so he was surprised when the referee awarded the fight to the Ondo state judoka. Upon inquiry, Godfrey said it was revealed to him that the only reason why the referee awarded the fight to the Ondo state judoka was because she was from a neighbouring state, Ekiti. The coach was livid, given that the referee earns her living working as a naval officer at the Abuloma jetty in Rivers State. The Rivers State judokas have threatened to settle scores with her when she returns to Port Harcourt after the festival to perform her duties as a naval officer.
