Gombe promises cash for medal winning athletes, co

THE Gombe State government has promised additional financial incentives to athletes and coaches who win medals at the 14th National Sports Festival taking place in Abuja. State Commissioner of Sports and Culture Lt. Colonel Magaji Pilam, (rtd.) stated at a press conference held at the Abuja Stadium Media Centre today that it was the government’s way of encouraging high performance from it’s athletes.

Col. Pilam told Nigeriasports.com that “any coach whose athlete wins a gold medal will be given 30,000 Naira; silver medal 20,000Naira, while bronze medal would fetch 10,000 Naira respectively.”

In like manner, Pilam said; “an athlete who wins a gold medal will be paid 50,000Naira, silver medal 30,000Naira and bronze medal 20,000Naira.”

The Commissioner told Nigeriasports.com that the state would return to getting young athletes from a grassroots development programme immediately after the Sports Festival to enable it compete favourably with other states of the federation.
