Delta narrows Edo's gold rush

The rush for gold at the 14th National Sports Festival in Abuja has continued to elicit intrigues and excitement as the chasing pack led by Delta State move to narrow the gap between them and Edo who have yet to relinquish their position since competition commenced. According to the festival's medals standings made available to nigeriasports.com Tuesday afternoon, only 7 gold now separate Edo and Delta with Lagos also strengthning their hold on the third position. Edo currently sit atop of the ladder with 29 gold 27 silver and 25 bronze medals,Delta are next on 22 gold,25 silver and 20 bronze while Lagos flaunt 16 gold,11 silver and 12 bronze.Ondo,Bayelsa, the FCT,Rivers,Abia,Plateau and Oyo States make up the top ten on the medals table. Remarkably ,Jigawa,Kebbi and Zamfara are the only states yet to win any shade of laurel at the festival whuch is fast approaching its crescendo. Delta State sports commissioner Solomon Ogba told nigeriasports.com in an interview that his athletes would soon confound all the predictions of Edo repeating their all-conquering feat of 2002 at te Abuja festival. "I bet you have not seen anything yet,by the time we start winning all the medals we've targetted everybody will know which state is the real champion when it comes to sports. We know what they did in Benin City, so we're not leaving anything to chance,"said Ogba.
