Paulina Clement of Borno State and Gbenga Adeyi of Ogun State sparked a roller-coaster of emotions enroute their emergence as women and men's champions of the squash event at the 14th National Sports Festival in Abuja, reports nigeriasports.com. In the women's final, Paulina proved too much for pre-tournamenrt favourite Edem James of Akwa Ibom State.Paulina beat Edem in a one-sided match 9-0,9-2,9-4 to win the ultimate prize at stake while Edem settled for the silver.
Adeyi however lived up to the billing in the men's final where he also won in three straight sets defeating fellow Ogun State representative 9-5,9-6,9-7.
To reach the final Adeyi had brushed aside hard fighting Amos Haruna from Borno State 9-6,9-7,9-0.But Ajayi had to endure a five-set thriller before easing out Efe Egbe of Edo State in 3-9,9-0,1-9,9-7,9-0.
Adeyi's feat made it a back to back victory for Ogun and confirms the state's superiority in this particular event of the sports festival.
Semi-finals of the team events were going on at the time of filing this report.
