Delta wacks Edo in football match

Female football action in Abuja
It was a battle of wits at the Aguiyi Ironsi cantonment as Edo State took on arch rivals, Delta in a match to determine who tops their group.

Both Edo and Delta thrashed Adamawa 4-0 to tie on points and goals and were both looking to win and top the group in order to avoid hosts, FCT but at the end of 90 minutes, it was Delta State coming out tops, leaving the Edo girls wondering what might have been.

The game was barely 3 minutes old when Edith Eduviere from Edo State was rushed to the hospital following a head on collision with Faith Nwolu.

She needed immediate first aid to stop the bleeding and stitches at the clinic.

Her absence caused a gap in the Edo midfield which, Semola Akinlose and Promise Sike in Delta’s midfield capitalized on.

Just before half time, Precious Nnodim got the only goal of the match in a goal mouth scramble.

The second half of the game was a scrappy affair as Cynthia Uwak in attack for Edo tried to do it all on her own and ended up being clumsy most of the time.

Cynthia Uwak however caught the eyes of National team handler, Ismaila Mabo who told nigeriasports.com after the match that he was very impressed with her performance.

"This is not my first time of watching Cynthia play, and i must say that she has been very consistent with her game. I will surely pencil down her name for invitation when the Falcons camp resumes."

Mabo also said he would recommend her to the national U-19 coach, Felix Ibe if she would still be eligible having played the U-19 World cup two years ago.

Edo had the better play in the half but just could not get their acts together in front of goal.

At the dot of 90minutes, the referee awarded a hotly disputed penalty to Delta but Semola Akinlose blasted it wide.

Delta State, by this victory have avoided hosts FCT and will now play against  Enugu, while Edo state will be up against FCT in the quarter finals of the female football event.
