Figbele's record lives on in swimming

Regina Figbele's 10:45:50 record in the women's 800 metres freestyle remained unbroken 23 years after. The Ondo mermaid's record was proved insurmountable for Meme James of Edo State who won gold in the same event at the National Sports Festival in Abuja. James recorded a time of 11:29:70 to win the women's 800 metres freestyle here.Akpos Ekedetoru and Magareth Forcados of Delta won the siver and bronze in a time of 11:54:00 and 12:04:78, respectively. Also sensational Uche Monu was a shadow of herself in the women's 200 metres freestyle where though she scooped the gold but her time of 2:25:87 was far from upsetting the festival record of 2:22:43 set by Ikhaghoemi Joshua of Rivers State at the Bauchi '91 edition. James who had earlier won gold in the 800 metre freestyle had to be contended with silver in the 200 metres freestyle having finished second behind Monu in a time of 2:27:02.Bronze went to Delta's Forcados. Monu was to make it a double in the 100 metres backstroke where she returned 1:17:03 to pick the gold ,while siver and bronze went to Memo James of Edo and Gloria Mma of Bauchi respectively.
