Rivers splash #30 million on athletes

There was joy in the rivers state camp at the games village when all allowances and entitlements were paid to the athletes and officials of the state.

An aide to the Rivers State Sports Commissioner told Nigeriasports.com that at least 30million naira must have been paid out on Thursday morning.

Rivers State Sports director, Daobu Harry was all smiles late on Thursday night as he told Nigeriasports.com that with the latest development, the athletes may be lacking very little in motivation.

“They all have their monies paid, and have been well kitted.They are also being fed specially by the Rivers State Sports ministry despite the central arrangement made by the LOC, which is obviously not working. I don’t think they have a reason not to smile,” The Rivers State Sports Director said.

Rivers State Sports boss, Allwell Onyesoh had early reiterated that the state would do every thing to make her athletes comfortable at the games, despite the fact that they did not come with a win at all cost mentality.

“I know a lot of people will wonder why we are spending so much on athlete’s welfare without talking loud about winning the games, but I have always said we are planning for the future. What we do not win now, we will surely get in subsequent festivals”

Rivers State got their first medals on Friday in ladies golf where Gladys Amadi and Jennifer B. won bronze in the Ladies gold Team Stable ford.

In the Ladies silver division, team stable ford, Mrs Rosaline Briggs and Mary Maduakor got the Silver, while Mrs Gladys Amadi got Gold in the Ladies Gold division Gross first day. In the ladies silver division, net First day; Mary Maduakor also got the gold for Rivers State.
