Biu re-asserts authority

Speculations about chairmanship of the media sub-committee of Abuja 2004 LOC changing hands have been nipped in the bud with Alhaji Ibrahim Biu re-asserting his authority as chief public relations manager of the 14th National Sports Festival in Nigeria's avant garde capital.

Otunba Olusegun Runsewe,a deputy director at the National Orientation Agency[NOA],ws alleged to have made subtle attempts at imposing himself on the media committee and reportedly claiming his move was informed by a directive issued by the Presidency.

But officials on the media committtee had in a swift move denounced such a directive, saying that the committee has not received anything to that effect from the Presidency.

"What happened was that the media committtee had found it tough carrying out its business since it settled down to work. Some people then thought that was an opportunity for them to take over,"revealed a source at the LOC secretariat who sought for anonymity.

Runsewe's alleged moves were said to have been fiercely resisted and he was given the position of a co-ordinator to assuage his feelings.

Investigations revealed that the NOA top shot might have tried to be onthe media committee based on his vast experience as a journalist and his recent job as co-ordinator of the last Commonwealth Heads of States and Governments Meeting.

Biu in an exclusive interview with nigeriasports.com said there was never a struggle for power onthe media committee, averring instead that there was just a minor misunderstanding which ,according to him ,had since been resolved.

"There was never any attempt by anybody to take over my job.I am still the chairman of the media committee. But we welcome advices from well-meaning individuals who may want to chip in one or two to assist us.

"Don't forget this is a Nigerian project and as such every Nigerian is free to contribute his or her quota. There should be no cause for alarm."

Attempts at getting Runsewe to state his side of the story proved abortive as he was said to be unavailable at his office, neither could he be reached on phone.
