Chioma Ajunwa returns

Chioma Ajunwa
Atlanta ’96 long jump gold medal winner, Chioma Ajunwa is back to competitive sports as she is part of the Rivers State team to the 14th National Sports Festival, Nigeriasports.com can exlusively report.

Police Woman, Chioma Ajunwa became the fist Nigerian to win gold medal at the Olympic Games after coming out of a four year ban for drug offences.

She was later banned for life when she had a second positive test.

However, this time she is back, but not in an outdoor event.

The Police Inspector would lead the Rivers State Chess team to the Sports Festival kicking off on Monday, the 3rd of May.

“She is one of our players, Rivers State Chess coach, Benibo Amiefori told Nigeriasports.com.

“We just hope we can secure her release from the Police commissioner so she would leave with us on Monday,” Benibo said.

However, Chioma Ajunwa did not sound too optimistic when she spoke with Nigeriasports.com on Sunday morning.

“I have not gotten my release and I think it may be because of the way it was written and presented, but I am still hopeful that they would eventually release me so I can be part of the sports fiesta.”

She however warned Nigerian sports watchers not to be to optimistic about her chances in Abuja, saying she is still learning the ropes as far as  the game is concerned.

“I agree I played football to the highest level, even featuring for the Falcons and I represented the country in Long jump and the sprints, even winning a gold medal in long jump at the Olympics, but Chess is a different game and I can say I am still learning.”

“I only just learned the game and am not really looking forward to a medal but just the experience of doing something that would no make me sweat like before.”

The biggest medal hopeful in the Rivers State Chess team would no doubt be Abiye Williams who would be participating in his last Sports Festival.
