Albert Bicon
The Equity Bank Junior Tennis Championship taking place at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club is throwing up potential rivalries in different age groups. One of such rivalries is brewing in the girls 12 and under category and it will be between Chika Okoro and Lolia Kienka. The other is likely to feature Nneka, the elder sister of Chika and Blessing Samuel.

Chika Okoro and Lolia Kienka are through to the finals but both got a chance to assess each other in the quarterfinals of the 14 and under category with Chika winning on the occasion 6-2, 6-2.

Nneka and Blessing are also sure bets for the 14 and under girls’ finals.
The rivalries in the girls 16 will become clearer when the doubtful age declarations are sorted out.

In the boys 12, Samuel Omoile, the amiable son of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club gardener looks set to dominate for a while, but he will have a run for his talents from Albert Bicom.

Other rivalries will become clearer in the closing stages of the tournament.

In the meantime, the tournament continues to attract young boys and girls from all over the country. One of such was seven year-old Olatubosin Jimoh who walked in from the neighborhood, Wednesday, with a badminton racquet and wearing rubber sandals asking to be given a chance to play.

He was promptly given a shoe and a clean shirt by the organizers and sent to the knock up wall. He has been a permanent feature of the tournament since then.

“Such a child” said Mr Godwin Kienka, director of the International Tennis Academy and originator of the circuit, “need no extra motivation. They already have it inside of them. What they need is the opportunity to train and compete and the equipment.”
