Olowokandi, Mutombo storms Africa

Nigeria-born Michael Olowokandi of Minnesota Timberwolves and Zairian Dikembe Mutombo of New York Knicks will lead other NBA stars both active and retired to this year’s Top 100 African Basketball Camp slated for Johannesburg, South Africa from September 6-10.

Other players lined up for the trip include Cleveland Cavaliers team-mates Ruben Boumtje Boumtje (Cameroon) and DeSagana Diop (Senegal), San Antonio Spurs
forward Malik Rose,Toronto   Raptors  center-guard  Chris  Bosh  and  Toronto  Raptors forward-guard  Michael  Curry,  who  is  also President  of  the  National Basketball  Players Association, Nigeriasports.com can authoritatively reveal.

In  addition,  NBA  coaching  and   team personnel  from  10 different NBA teams including Detroit Pistons  President of  Basketball  Operations  Joe  Dumars, Philadelphia 76ers assistant  coach Alex  English and Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Donnie Nelson will coach at  the  camp.  

The camp’s directors Nigeriasports.com gathered include Dallas Mavericks Director of Scouting Amadou Fall, a native of Senegal, and Sam Vincent, head coach of the Nigeria national team, who headed last year’s edition.

"Dikembe"

The camp is being sponsored by NBA, FIBA and Basketball South Africa; it is aimed at bringing African youth players’ together through basketball Instruction, Community Outreach and NBA Legacy Project in South Africa.

The programmes would feature extensive community outreach and incorporates educational seminars addressing important social issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention and education for the young players from more than 20 African countries including Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Lesotho, Mozambique, Senegal and Nigeria.

"Basketball"

The players were selected for their basketball skills, leadership abilities and dedication to the sport of basketball by FIBA, in conjunction with Participating basketball federations. 

The NBA and FIBA will donate products, such as basketballs, rims and nets to local basketball federations.

“We are very grateful to the individuals and entities such as BSA, South African Airways, NOCSA and all the sponsors who have met the challenge to realize this camp once again with Basketball without Borders Africa,” said FIBA International Relations and Development Manager Anicet Lavodrama.
