Nigeria crash out of singles events

African Junior Tennis Tourney: Inadequate exposure rather than technical incompetence has ensured that Nigeria's representatives miss out of the honours roll call in the singles events of the 2004 African Junior Tennis Championships in Cairo,Egypt.    Sunday Emmanuel,Sunny Dickson,Clifford Phillips and
Blessing Samuel, all failed to advance beyond the
preliminary rounds of the competition.

President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation[NTF]
Engr. Sani Ndanusa told nigeriasports.com Thursday
that all the players put up gallant performances
against their respective opponents, but their efforts
proved abortive.

Said Ndanusa:"The report I got from their coach in
Cairo was that each of them played very
well. However,it was obvious that they were up against
better exposed opponents.

"We are not disappointed as such because this is
basically a developmental programme;we know they can
do better if given the opportunity to play more
outside the country."

  ...Hopes alive in doubles

Meanwhile there are hopes that Nigeria can still
scratch something meaningful from the tournament as
four of the players booked their passage to
semi-finals and quarter-finals in the doubles events.

The duo of  Emmanuel and phillips are up against
unidentified opponents in one of Friday's
quarter-final pairings, ditto Blesing who pairs another
player in the women's category.

Emmanuel, revealed Ndanusa, will team up with a
Kenyan girl in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles.
