Agoye returns for loyalty, not money

Shooting Stars Sports Club
Shooting Stars of Ibadan Striker Edith Agoye says he returned to the Ibadan club after his failed sojourn in North Africa and Europe not because of the money the Ibadan warlords had on offer but more because of his loyalty to the club.

Agoye told nigeriasports.com that he could have easily joined Enyimba or Julius Berger of Lagos but he felt he got all his fame by playing for Shooting Stars while still a student at the University of Ibadan so this was his time to put something back to the club.

“It was a decision I made when I chose to come back to Nigeria that if I should play for any club it will be shooting stars and that was why I signed for them even when they were in the lower division.”

“They gave me a chance to excel and sell myself to the Nigerian public and to the outside world so this is the only time I have to pay them back. I already have the name and am not after money so why shouldn’t I give back to the institution that made me?”

Agoye said the target for Shooting Stars this season is not to win the league because nobody wants to put undue pressure on the players who are still very young.

“What we would like to do is consolidate on our premiership status and will just take any other thing we get as a bonus. We have a really young side and anyone who thinks Shooting Stars will win the league, just wants to put the boys under undue pressure.”

He also ruled out a return to the national team for now saying he first wants to be consistent with his game and see how far he can take Shooting.

“If the National team handlers think I have done well enough to merit an invitation I will take it but for now, my mind is on taking Shooting as far as possible.”

Edith Agoye was in the Shooting stars team that played in the CAF Champions Cup in 1996 and got to the final losing on penalties to Zamalek of Egypt after winning 2-1 in Ibadan and losing by the same score in Egypt.
