Babalola covets Olympic berth

Top player Abdulmumini Babalola would brook no challenge as he strives to make Nigeria's men's team to the Olympic Games in Athens.Coach Rotimi Akinloye has the onerous task of selecting two from among four probables.Others are Sunday Maku,Toyin Dairo and United States-based Jonathan Igbinovia.  "I don't think of  myself as a finished
article, more as a learner who will not want to stop
until he gets to the pinnacle of his career,"began
Babalola in an exclusive interview with
nigeriasports.com.

Babalola, exploiting his turn of pace and cool head
on court, has been in wonderful match-winning groove in
recent years, racking up the nation's number one player
garb in the process.

Although he is the country's most in-form player on
the local scene,he is no rookie sensation. As a
junior, his performances won him a number of honours
and endeared him to national team selectors.

"My focus right now is to make the team to the
Olympics,I know I'm capable. The Olympics will give me
the opportunity to exhibit my talent at the world
level and most importantly, learn new tricks in the
game.

"It is every player's dream to be at such
competitions...four of us have been invited to
camp.Even though there is intense rivalry I'm
optimistic I'll make it,"declared the 20-year-old.

Akinloye would not want to appraise  the prospect
of each of  the  players in camp making the trip to
Athens, but remarked that competition is fierce.

"We have four outstanding players in competition
for two slots, and I feel any two of them can sail
through without sacrificing merit in any way,"he
explained.

Nigeria has been guaranteed only one entry in the
singles events of the Olympic tennis competition, and
that is in the women's singles category where Clara
Udofa will vie for medals.
