CAF wades into Rangers, El-Nasir's impasse
The African Football Confederation [CAF] has intervened in the disagreement over logistics between officials of Rangers International of Nigeria and their hosts in this weekend's Confederation Cup first round game El-Nasir of Libya.
The Nigerian team that departed Lagos for Libya on Tuesday were said to have been denied a flight to match venue on arrival in Tripoli. "The report we heard from Rangers was that when they arrived Tripoli, officials of both the Libyan FA and El-Nasir said the match was no longer taking place in Tripoli but in Benghazi,"spokesman to the Nigeria He further disclosed that ,"the Libyans subsequently decided to transport Rangers from Tripoli to Benghazi by road, a decision that was turned down by Rangers because the distance between the two cities is 1000 kilometers. "Rangers' officials had to seek the immediate intervention of CAF when the Libyans seemed not willing to do the correct thing." Both players and officials of the Nigerian club were to be airlifted to Benghazi today as the African soccer ruling body had instructed the Libyans. The Confederation Cup match between the two comes up on Friday while the second leg holds in a fortnight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. Reports: Dipo Okubanjo
