Boxing evolution night in Lagos

With professional Boxing almost dead in the country and all the best fighters moving out, the Island club, Lagos has taken the bull by the horn to revive the sport that first brought Nigeria glory in the late fifties and sixties.

The club in concert with the Nigeria Boxing Board of control will Friday 12, March promote an eight-bout showdown at the club premises at Onikan area of Lagos.

The main bout Nigeriasports.com can authoritatively reveal will be for the Africa Welter weight title bout between fast rising national champion, Fatai Onikeke and the man he beat to win the title Semi Clay.

The bout will go over 12 rounds and promises to be very exciting. Onikeke said he would be using the fight to prepare for his upcoming commonwealth title bout later in the year.

Die is cast
He has promised to stop Clay “I am not training because of Clay but because of my commonwealth fight coming up soon, if it is for Clay then I will just wake up to beat him up”

“He is not in my class and will never be,” he said.

Under cards
In the under cards National light heavy weight Champion Fatai Olaide will put his title on the line when he squares up against challenger Babatunde Alimi. Olaide has since promised to retain his title.

Sunday Ajayi will be going against ‘Mouthy’ Babalola Johnson in a national lightweight eliminator, which would go over ten rounds.

In the other bouts Adeyemo Adegoke will take on Emeka Kodo in a national lightweight challenge contest.

Ashafa Lawal will also keep a date with Muri Akeem in a Bantamweight challenge contest over six rounds.

Also billed is one preliminary welterweight contest between Dele Adeleke versus Kola Abiola and finally a national middleweight challenge contest, Sunny King
Hammer will take on a yet to named opponent.

Female affair
There is also a female middleweight bout involving Peace Pius against Nkechi Aloma.

All the bouts are approved by the African Boxing Union (ABU) and the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C).
