Chairman’s Cup begins in Lagos

....Ogundele, Ajetunmobi vow to retain title

Defending champions of the Chairman's Table Tennis, Ganait Ogundele and Seun Ajetunmobi have vowed not to relinquish their titles, as the fourth edition of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association (LSTTA) organized ‘Chairman’s Cup’ begins at the Sports Hall, University of Lagos.

Aside this, top table tennis players will besiege the venue to jostle for the $7,500 prize money earmarked for the championship.

In previous editions, Ogundele have won all while Ajetunmobi won two and both players will have their hands full when they confront other top ping pongers from across the country at the competition.

With the presence of the likes of African and Commonwealth champion, Segun Toriola and Monday Merotohun that will add glamour to the champion, the event promises to be highly competitive.

But an optimistic Ogundele said yesterday that she is not afraid of any opposition as she is capable of retaining her title.

The five-time Asoju-Oba Cup champion, who was taken to the cleaners by lesser known players in the just concluded Spring Fresh League said she had put the defeats behind her, adding that she is ready to face new challenge.

“I am still baffled by the losses I recorded during the Spring Fresh League but that is sports. I am now focus on new tasks because I don’t bother myself about past events. I know it is going to be tasking with others also in top shape for the championship,” she reiterated.

Also, Ajetunmobi, who will be using the competition to prepare for next week’s Procold Championship, is hoping to wrestle the title from Toriola, who won the maiden edition last year.

Over 60 players will jostle for the $7,500 prize money earmarked for the championship. The final matches will be played today.
