Cameroon reach quarter-finals

Cameroon through to next round
Indomitable lions of Cameroon lived up to billings, by coming tops of Group C despite a strong Egyptian challenge in Monastir.

The keenly contested tie ended in a barren draw leaving the huge Egyptian fans disappointed and from the roars of the crowd, it was clear that the Pharaohs boast a sizeable number of supporters in the stadium.

Ahmed Mido Hassan failed to sparkle and was often kept in check by Rigobert Song and he explained that the Cameroonian defenders were mean in their tackles.

“I gave all my best but the referee failed to see how much dangers I had to go through” says the former Ajax player.

“Too bad we have to go out but things would have been different if we won against Algeria” he concluded.

Algeria scale through

Meanwhile, Desert warriors of Algeria joined the defending champions, Cameroon in the Q-finals despite losing 1-2 to Zimbabwe.

Although, Zimbabwe ended their first appearance at the Cup of Nations with a deserved win over the North Africans but the latter booked their place on goals difference.

Peter Ndlovu’s younger brother, Adam Ndlovu missed two gilt-edged first-half chances before finally making the breakthrough when he headed in off a post from a corner in the 60th minute.

It took the debutants another six minutes, a Zimbabwe break saw Joel Luphahla fire in a second and at 2-0 Algeria would have been out.

Algeria got a dramatic goal through Hocine Achiou, the hero against Egypt, headed home a crucial goal to ensure that Algeria creep through on goal difference.

Ironically, Algeria would have kissed the nations cup goodbye had the game ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Algeria and Cameroon will have to wait till Wednesday evening to know their respective opponent as Nigeria battle Benin and Morocco squares up against South Africa in Group D.
