NFF Terminates Contract with Globacom
The Nigeria Football Federation on Monday said it has taken a decision to terminate its sponsorship agreement with leading telecom outfit, Globacom Nigeria Limited.
Federation President Sani Lulu Abdullahi said the Executive Committee of the body, which met in Abuja on Saturday, resolved that the partnership was no longer working and therefore was a marriage of inconvenience.
“We have decided that termination is the best option, and that decision was reached after the fulfillment of the 30 –Day Notice that is stipulated in the agreement”, said Abdullahi.
The NFF had on the 18th June, 2008 sent a Notice of Termination letter to Globacom Nigeria Limited, which read, inter alia: “In accordance with the express provisions of the clause 5.2.1 of the sponsorship contract Agreement entered into between the Nigeria Football Association and Globacom Limited, the NFA hereby serves notice to Globacom of its firm and definite resolution to terminate the said Agreement, if within thirty days (30) of the receipt of this notice, you do not effect payment of the sum of N150,000,000.00 being the sponsorship fee payable by Globacom to NFA”.
The 30 –Day Notice lapsed on 18th July, 2008. According to clause 5.2.1 of the Agreement between both parties, either party may terminate the Agreement “if the other party fails to observe or perform any of its material obligations and does not remedy such failure within 30 days after being called upon to do so by written notice…”
NFF’s Assistant General Secretary (Marketing), Idris Adama said Globacom has failed to live up to the expectations of the Agreement despite correspondence and several meetings meant to achieve a peace and harmonious relationship.
“There have been several breaches now and again, battles every year for payment of the Right fee. That should not be so. It is better that both parties go their different ways”, said Adama who also made it known that several other leading business establishments are waiting in the wings to take over sponsorship of the National Teams.
The contract with Globacom for sponsorship of the National Teams was signed on 9th December, 2004, for a period of five years. Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima and Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi signed for the then NFA as Chairman and Secretary General respectively.
NFF President Lulu Abdullahi will on Friday give more details concerning the termination. The Annual General Assembly of the NFA held in Makurdi on Thursday approved the change of name to NFF.
