All roads lead to Akure for SWAN award

ALL is now set for the Second Nigerian Sports Awards Night 2007, by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Akure the Ondo State capital Friday.

President of the association, Olu Amadasun said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The SWAN president said Chief Alex Akinyele, a one time Sports Minister, will serve chairman of the occasion while Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, chairman of Senate Committee on Sports, would serve as the special Guest of Honour, the incumbent Sports Minister/ Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Abdulrahman Gimba is to be one of the special guests at the occasion.

Ondo State governor, Olusegun Agagu of is the chief host of the occasion when various sportsmen, journalists and administrators would be honoured.

According to Amadasun, Chrisantus Macauley, the highest goal scorer at the last World U-17 FIFA World Cup in South Korea has been named as the Footballer of the Year while World Boxing Champion, Samuel Peters has been named the Sportsman of the Year while Africa's fastest man, Olusoji Fasuba was named the Athlete of the Year.

Coach Ifeanyi Onyedika, who coached Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt last year is the Coach of the Year under review, just as the Administrator of the Year award would be carted home by Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu of Enyimba FC of Aba.

SWAN’s own Ade Ojekeire, Sports Editor of the Nation Newspaper, has been named as the Best Sports Writer of the Year while the Super Sports is the Best Cable TV Station of the Year on Sports.

Various other dignitaries and sports lovers from across the country are expected to storm Akure for tomorrow’s great event, Mr. Amadasun added.
