Rivers Commissioner charge athletes

The Rivers State Commissioner for Sports Hon. Boma Iyaye has enjoined the state athletes to be good ambassadors of the state, as they seek for qualification in the South-South zonal elimination for the national sports festival scheduled for Kaduna in November.

Hon. Iyaye who undertook the unscheduled visit to psyche up the athletes said that the state is proud of them and considers them as ambassadors that can bring honour to the state.

The Commissioner said that the state considers their welfare as paramount and has in that light provided all necessities to make them comfortable in their stay in Calabar, venue of the south-south qualifications.

He told the athletes and their officials that the state governor, Rotimi Chibiuke Amaechi has a Pandora box of surprises for them if they eventually go on to win medals at the national sports fiesta in Kaduna.

Earlier, the Rivers State Sports Council acting Director of Sports, Sir Daobu Harry had informed the athletes that the commissioner for sports had to cut short his state assignment abroad in order to be with them.

Sir Harry said the commissioner had approved the sum of N1, 500 and N1, 200 as daily and feeding allowances, respectively.

The Sports Council boss promised that the athletes will make the state proud as they are disciplined and focused.

In the same vein, Godwin Robinson, Team Captain of the state contingent said that they had never had a welfare package so good, as this is the first time the athletes will be traveling in brand new air-conditioned buses, had a closed camp without crises of welfare needs.

So far, the Rivers State contingents of over 260 persons are already in Calabar, Cross Rivers State capital.
