South African not scared of Nigeria
Lance Davids, hard tackling midfielder of South African national football team, locally known as Bafana Bafana, will not be star struck when he lines up against Nigeria in what could be the biggest match of his career in Abuja on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Cape Town born Davids who plays for leading Swedish club Djurgardens, is one of the promising stars who local fans are hoping will set the 2010 World Cup finals alight. Davids showed glimpses of his potential when he played a couple of impressive cameo roles under former Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira at the African Nations Cup finals in January this year. But the prospect of playing against the likes of legendary Super Eagles skipper and top striker, Nwankwu Kanu, his Portsmouth teammate John Utaka who helped their English Premiership club lift the FA Cup at Wembley earlier this month, adds to the excitement of this clash between the two countries. Nigerian coach, Shaibu Amodu, a former Orlando Pirates coach has, also included Chelsea's John Obi Mikel and the Everton trio of Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Victor Anichebe and Joseph Yobo for Sunday's clash. Davids who can play on the right side of the midfield as a winger or as a right back, said "I have never played against Nigeria, but I have heard about previous games, but that does not intimidate me. On the contrary, I want to help Bafana Bafana beat Nigeria. I am not fazed by the big names Nigeria will field against us." Davids was happy with his first training session at the Germiston Stadium under new head coach Joel Santana. Brazilian born Santana replaced fellow countryman Parreira last week and has been thrown into the deep end with four back-to-back 2010 African Nations Cup qualifiers in June. Bafana Bafana will play Equatorial Guinea on June 7 at Atteridgeville's Super Stadium, followed by an away trip to Gambia where they face Sierra Leone, and then the return clash against Equatorial Guinea at the Super Stadium on June 21. Davids said that "the new coach looks set to follow the same game plan as Parreira. His methods are the same as the previous coach so we are continuing from where we left off. I do not think the new coach will make too many changes as the team was starting to gel under Parreira and a win over Nigeria would cement that improvement." 0
